Tips to create a video resume

In a highly competitive job market, a video CV can make you stand out in a selection process. Learn how to do it.

WHAT IS A VIDEO RESUME?

The video resume is a new format of CV, which allows the candidate to present himself beyond the classic paper format. In Portugal, it is a format that is starting to gain some relevance especially in companies that value innovation and creativity.
If you are ever asked to provide a video CV or if you just want to differentiate yourself from other candidates, why not try a video CV? Whether you think it's a good idea or not, there are a few rules to follow to maximize the quality of your video resume.

TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN CREATING A VIDEO CV

  • Don't improvise: write a script, rehearse and film it several times. A video CV can be a really good way to show some of your soft skills (attention to detail, originality, creativity, etc.). However, don't skimp on quality! Treat it like a real PDF CV, so spend some time working on the text before you start, practise and film it several times. In terms of information, your CV should have the same content as a normal CV. Spend some time organizing your thoughts.
  • Stay concise: While a video CV can be a great tool to showcase your creativity, it can also be detrimental to other soft skills, such as synthesis and the ability to be objective. Keep it clear, precise and succinct: a video resume should not last more than 1mn - 1mn30.
  • Fit the job you're applying for: mention the role and position you're applying for and highlight stories, projects you're proud of or achievements important to the position.
  • Spend some time in post-production: even though you may not be a professional video producer, you still should spend a little bit of time in post-production. Keep a particular attention to the sound quality, the lighting, the transitions. Don't forget to add subtitles too. Try to intersperse moments when you speak to the camera with other images or graphics, showing dynamism. Choosing a neutral background and a good framing are also assets.
  • Compress the video. In the end, you can integrate the link into your paper CV, send the video by we transfer to the recruiter or ideally use a video platform such as Youtube or Vimeo (with access restrictions only on who you want to access it).
  • Never send it without a normal CV: a video CV is a great way to differentiate yourself from other candidates, but always send your video with a more traditional version of your resume. Maybe the recruiter don't have the time to review your video resume, or maybe they use a CV screening device.
