How to nail the first 5 minutes of an interview

Did you know that recruiters tend to form an opinion about the candidate within the first five minutes? Learn the best strategies for the success.

MASTER THE INTERVIEW IN THE FIRST 5 MINUTES

An interview is a normal part of a recruitment process, so you usually can't skip it. As important as the interview is, we often hear that the first impression is everything. Believe, the time to create a good first impression is short.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Be professional to everyone, not just the interviewer: you certainly want to impress the recruiter. However, don't forget to be professional from the moment you enter the building, have contact with the reception staff, etc. (if you get an in- person interview). It may not seem like it, but often the interview starts the moment you walk through the entrance door. Be cordial and friendly with everyone you meet, regardless of hierarchies.
  • Be on time: the rule here is simple! Don't be late, but don't be too early either. In any case, if you need to reschedule, always communicate with your contact in the company as soon as possible. Sometimes unpredictable things happen, but the way you handle the situation is always analysed by the recruiter. The same rules apply to a remote interview.
  • Get ready: this tip is essential for every interview, but sometimes you will have to start by introducing yourself and/or the company. Check the available online information about the company, organise your thoughts and rehearse. Consider it a challenge: you should always be ready to present yourself in a few minutes. • Organise yourself to answer any question. Practice beforehand how to answer the most common questions that come up early on, notably "Tell me about yourself" is often an opening question. Practise out loud. Being able to answer the question succinctly and directly will give the impression that you are a good communicator. Recruiters will notice if you have done your homework and prepared for the interview.
  • Dress for the occasion: according to the culture of the company you are applying for. The important thing is to be aligned and to fit in with the corporate culture and the position you are applying for. When in doubt, it is best to bet on more sober and classic clothes.
  • Non-verbal communication: we tend to sometimes forget how important it is. From the way you shake your hand, to the wat you hold yourself, to the way you look at the recruiter. Always adopt a posture of confidence. Make eye contact, smile and demonstrate that you are happy to be there and that you really want that job. Always transmit enthusiasm and interest. And wait to be invited to sit down.
  • Special tip for remote/video interviews: think about your environment. Always test your device and the platform you'll be using beforehand. Find a pleasant and calm environment. See more tips on how to prepare for the online job interview

Your attitude will make the difference. Believe in yourself. Show confidence, passion for what you do and transmit that you are the ideal candidate for the job. Create empathy and make a good first impression. The first 5 minutes are crucial. Contact a Fed Finance Portugal consultant if you need further advice.
