How to update your CV in less than 30 minutes

Creating an effective CV is one of the steps to take when looking for a new professional challenge. But this may not always be an easy task. Follow our recruiters' tips for a quick update in less than 30 minutes!

Ideally, we should update our CV from time to time, so that we can make it available almost without having to modify it. With the passage of time much of the information contained in the document that contains the summary of all our professional and academic life ends up being outdated, as a result of the professional experiences that take place over the years. The challenge lies in recycling all the information and presenting a new face to what is often our first contact with a potential employer.

OUR RECRUITERS' TIPS

Remove the irrelevant

First of all take a look at your old CV. Some of your experiences that might once have made sense may now be taking the focus off what the recruiter is interested in. Don't hesitate to cut out some of that information to make room for it and highlight recent achievements or relevant training. Keep in mind who you are sending your CV to and what information will be pertinent to that person or company. From there, it will be easier to distinguish the important information from that which you can actually take out.

List what matters

Study in advance the position you are applying for and the requirements for that function. This will help you orient your CV to what is required. Start by humanizing your CV by talking about yourself. You can give a brief summary at the beginning, revealing a bit about your interests and what got you to where you are or what led you to choose this area of work. Remember to always orient your speech to your interlocutor! Start now to highlight your professional experience. In this field, and in case you have had very varied professional experiences, only give space to those which are relevant to the position you are applying for. List your education, university or other. In this area, always check the name of the educational institutions. Often, there are name alterations and it is important to update the nomenclatures so that recruiters know exactly where you have studied and where you have done your training. Nowadays it is usual to add links to social networks to CVs, namely LinkedIn, which is a professional network. If it is your case, do not forget to check if you keep your LinkedIn updated.

Let the document "breathe

Keep some space between lines so that the document is light and easy to read. To do this, do not hesitate to increase spacing and keep some places in the document empty. At this point you can make a first text revision, reading the text a first time. If you find that it is necessary, cut out any excess text and make it as concise as possible. Words should be direct and sentences short. This exercise will also help you to create more space in your document. You will find it visually more appealing and the reader will thank you for it.

Renew your design

Besides the content of the CV itself, the visual part should not be neglected. Nowadays there are numerous templates that help those who, not being designers, can present creative solutions to summarize their professional career in a more appealing way. Even so, be aware that your choice should always be in accordance with your professional area and be aligned with the culture of the company where you are sending your CV. What you can always do is add titles and use different fonts and colors to better organize the information. Do this to name a position and the companies you've worked for, for example. This helps certain elements stand out and makes for a more fluid read.

Read aloud

When you write a text, it is a good idea to read and re-read everything more than once because there is (almost) always something missing. Because prevention is better than repair, never forget to read your CV once more. A great technique, apart from reading it carefully and checking for grammatical errors, is to actually read it out loud. Among other things, this will help you avoid punctuation errors, figure out if the tone of your writing is too formal or informal, and if the words you're using are repeated or not.
