Free Online Psychometric Test: What It Really Trains, What Is a Waste of Time, and 12 Exercises with Answers

Key points

  • Free tests reproduce logical, numerical and verbal reasoning well. They do not reproduce personality questionnaires or the interview with the psychologist, which is where most exclusions happen.
  • In the Portuguese civil service, psychological assessment is graded only as Fit or Unfit and awards no points (Ordinance 233/2022). Training to "raise your score" makes no sense.
  • Five well-distributed hours over three weeks are enough for the average candidate. More than that rarely changes the outcome.

A free online psychometric test is good for one thing: getting used to the format, the pace and the type of reasoning you will be asked for. It cannot predict the result of a real assessment, because the instruments used in Portugal are protected tests administered and interpreted by psychologists. This article separates what is worth practising from what is wasted effort, gives you 12 exercises to do now, with answers, and a three-week plan that fits into five hours.

What a free test can and cannot do for you

Our position at Fed Finance is straightforward: free simulators are useful for taking the fear out of the format, and that is all they should be used for. Anyone who treats them as a prediction of the result is preparing for the wrong test.

Component of the assessment

Does a free online test reproduce it?

Why

Logical and abstract reasoning (series, matrices, rotations)

Yes

The format is universal and practice improves speed and pattern reading

Numerical reasoning (percentages, tables, charts)

Yes

The operations are always the same; what you train is doing them against the clock

Verbal reasoning (inference, analogies, vocabulary)

Partly

Good exercises help; many free sites use Brazilian Portuguese and vocabulary that does not appear in Portuguese tests

Attention and perception (counting, matching pairs, symbols)

Yes

Trained in minutes; almost all the gain comes in the first week

Personality and behavioural competencies

No

Real questionnaires have consistency scales; "training" produces incoherent answers that get detected

Interview with the psychologist and situational test

No

It is a professional act, not a multiple-choice exercise

The Portuguese Psychologists' Association (Ordem dos Psicólogos) is clear: psychological assessment is an act reserved to psychologists and is not reducible to administering tests. The same guidance note points out that subjecting the same person to the same tests within a short interval biases the results. For the candidate, that means the aim of practice is to arrive calm and quick, not to memorise answers.

Where you will meet these tests in Portugal

Not every selection process uses psychological assessment, and those that do use it differently. Knowing which situation you are in avoids preparing for a test you will never sit.

  • Public administration competitions. Mandatory method for candidates without a public employment contract, graded only as Fit or Unfit, with a result valid for 24 months from the approval of the final ranking list. The full rules are in our article on psychometric tests in the Portuguese civil service.

  • Security forces (PSP, GNR, prison service). Separate ordinances, with additional physical tests and a medical examination, all eliminatory. The exercises below cover the cognitive part, not the rest.

  • Banks, insurers and large consultancies. Online numerical and logical reasoning tests at the screening stage, usually timed and in English. This is the only private-sector context where speed training really matters.

  • Private companies in finance and accounting. On the assignments we handle, formal psychological assessment is rare. What decides is the competency-based interview and the practical accounting case. A candidate who spends three weeks on number series and none preparing concrete examples is investing backwards; we explain the method in our guide to the competency-based interview in finance.

Practise now: 12 exercises with answers

The exercises follow the four blocks found in cognitive tests. Do each block against the clock: 90 seconds for the three logic exercises, 3 minutes for the numerical ones, 2 minutes for the verbal ones, 60 seconds for attention. Open the answer only at the end of the block.

Logical and abstract reasoning

  1. Complete the series: 3, 7, 15, 31, ?Answer

  2. All certified accountants are members of the OCC. Some OCC members work in auditing. Which statement is necessarily true? a) All auditors are certified accountants. b) Some certified accountants work in auditing. c) None of the above.Answer

  3. A square has a dot in its top-left corner. At each step it rotates 90 degrees clockwise. Where is the dot after three steps?Answer

Numerical reasoning

  1. An invoice of €1,250 carries VAT at the standard rate of 23%. What is the total payable?Answer

  2. First-quarter sales were €84,000 and second-quarter sales €96,600. What is the percentage change?Answer

  3. A team of 4 people closes 60 files in 6 days. At the same rate, how many days do 6 people need to close 90 files?Answer

Verbal reasoning

  1. Synonym of diligent: a) slow b) conscientious c) hesitantAnswer

  2. Balance sheet is to assets as income statement is to: a) revenue b) equity c) liabilitiesAnswer

  3. "The company closed the year with a positive net result for the first time in three years, despite an 8% drop in sales." Which statement is supported by the text? a) Sales rose. b) Costs fell by more than sales. c) In the two previous years the result was not positive.Answer

Attention and perception

  1. How many times does the digit 7 appear in the sequence 7 1 7 7 4 7 9 7 2 7 1 7?Answer

  2. How many pairs are different? 48 213 / 48 231; 90 067 / 90 067; 12 458 / 12 485Answer

  3. In the line ◇ ○ △ ◇ □ ○ ◇ △ ◇ ○, how many times does ◇ appear immediately before ○?Answer

Two or more wrong in a block within the time? That is the block worth investing in. Everything right but over time? Your problem is pace, not reasoning, and it is fixed with short daily repetition, not long sessions.

A three-week preparation plan

Twelve 25-minute sessions add up to five hours. That is the time budget we recommend for a candidate with a test date. The distribution matters more than the total.

Week

Sessions

Content

Measurable goal

1

4 × 25 min

One block per session, no clock: logic, numerical, verbal, attention

Identify the weak block

2

4 × 25 min

Two sessions on the weak block, two on the others, all timed

Reach 80% correct within the time

3

4 × 25 min

Full simulation of the four blocks in sequence, at the time of day of the real test

Hold week 2 performance in sequence

Reading those 25 minutes, candidates almost always ask whether it is too little. In the competitions we follow for finance roles in public administration, those who are excluded are nearly always excluded at the knowledge test or as Unfit on the behavioural component, not for failing number series. The five hours are there to remove the element of surprise. The dozens of hours left over should go to the legislation listed in the notice and to interview examples.

Anxiety and the clock: what to do in test week

Time pressure is the one variable free tests reproduce badly, because nobody times themselves rigorously on their own. Five rules that work, tested with our candidates.

  • In the week 3 simulation, use the same time of day and the same duration as the real test, with your phone in another room.
  • In a timed test, never spend more than 60 seconds on one question. Mark it, move on, come back if time remains.
  • Read each block's instruction twice. Half of attention errors are misread-instruction errors.
  • In personality questionnaires, answer as you are, not as you think the role requires. Consistency scales exist for exactly that.
  • No practice the day before. The breathing and preparation techniques we use before any interview are in our guide to managing your stress before an interview.

How to read the result of a free test

A site that gives you "82nd percentile" after ten questions is making it up. A percentile only means something against a defined norm sample, and no free simulator has one for the Portuguese population. Ignore the number. What the result usefully tells you is elsewhere:

  • The correct-answer rate per block, compared between the first and last session. If it rose, the practice worked.
  • Average time per question. If it fell without losing accuracy, you are ready.
  • The type of error that recurs: misread instruction, miscalculation, inference beyond the text. Each has a different fix.

If the weak block does not improve in three weeks, one session with an occupational psychologist identifies in an hour what ten simulators cannot. It is a small cost compared with repeating a competition.

Artificial intelligence and gamification: what changes and what does not

Large employers increasingly use gamified and adaptive tests, where the difficulty of the next question depends on the previous answer. For the candidate this changes two things: there is no "getting stuck" on a question, because the test adjusts, and classic format practice helps less, because every session is different. What does not change: reasoning and consistency are still what is measured, and the time-per-question rules still apply.

A point candidates rarely know: the EU Artificial Intelligence Regulation classifies AI systems used to select and evaluate candidates as high-risk, with obligations of human oversight and information to the candidate. If a company assesses you with an automated system, you have the right to know it happened. In Portugal, the final decision on a psychological assessment still belongs to a psychologist, not an algorithm.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions our consultants hear most often on this subject.

Are free online psychometric tests reliable?

As format practice, yes. As a prediction of the result, no: the real tests are protected instruments, with norms and scales that simulators do not have.

Can you fail a psychometric test?

In the civil service, yes: an Unfit grade excludes you from the competition. In the private sector, the assessment is one element among others and is rarely eliminatory on its own.

If I sat the test in one competition, do I have to repeat it in the next?

Not necessarily. In public administration, a positive result is valid for 24 months from the approval of the final ranking list and can be reused in another procedure, on request to the selection panel.

Can you train for personality tests?

No, and trying is harmful. The questionnaires include control items that detect inconsistent or socially desirable answers.

Are the tests the same for all professions?

No. The protocol is built around the competency profile of the role. An accounting technician position weighs numerical reasoning and organisation; a customer-facing role weighs relational skills.
