References in the cv: yes or no

When drawing up a CV, doubts often arise about what information should be included and how to present it. These include the role of references in the CV and whether to include them. In this article, we'll discuss the pros and cons of adding references to your CV and how to take advantage of these professional references.

The purpose of CV references is to give the employer a more complete picture of your professional experience and skills. They can serve as a testimony to your ability and performance. Including references will show that you have nothing to hide and that you are willing to provide additional information to strengthen your candidacy.

The decision whether to include references on your CV is a personal one and can depend on several factors. Some companies require candidates to provide them from the initial stage of the selection process, while others will ask for them later, in a second phase. It is therefore important to be aware of the guidelines provided by the company you are applying to.

If the company doesn't ask for references from the start and you have limited space on your CV, it's advisable to leave references until later in the process, when they are really needed. That way, you avoid filling your CV with information that may not be relevant at the start of the process.

We've highlighted two types of relevant references that you can include on your CV:

  • Professional references: These are references that report people with whom you have worked directly, such as supervisors, managers, or work colleagues.
  • Academic references: For those who are still studying or are recent graduates, these references include professors, tutors or instructors who know about your academic performance skills and abilities.

PROS AND CONS OF ADDING REFERENCES TO YOUR CV

Adding references to your CV can have advantages and disadvantages. It's important to consider the pros and cons before deciding to include them.

  • They strengthen your application: Positive references from influential people in your field of work can lend credibility to your application.
  • They demonstrate professionalism: Including references shows that you are willing to provide additional information and are confident in your expertise.
  • They emphasise your skills: References can emphasise or support your skills, adding value to your application.
  • They presuppose a longer CV: If you have a CV with limited space, it's important to prioritise the most relevant information, such as your skills and previous experience.
  • They require constant updating: Your references won't always be available to provide information in good time, which can delay the selection process.
  • They can raise expectations: If your references don't meet the employer's requirements, this can negatively affect your application.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL REFERENCES

If you decide to include references on your CV, it's important to remember a few tips for maximising them.

  • Choose relevant references: Select people with whom you have had direct experience in the field of work and who are relevant to the position you are applying for.
  • Inform your references: Before including any references in your CV, let the person(s) in question know in advance so that they are prepared for possible contacts.
  • Update your references: Keep your reference contacts informed about your job search and the opportunities that interest you. That way, they will be able to provide up-to- date and relevant information to potential employers.
  • Say thank you: Whenever you receive a referral, be grateful and thank them for their availability and support. Networking and good professional relationships are crucial to success throughout the job search process.

Bear in mind that CV references play a role in the selection process and can strengthen your application as a way of demonstrating your professionalism. However, it's important to consider whether you should include them a priori, bearing in mind the company you're applying to. If you decide to go ahead, choose them carefully, keep them up to date and make the most of the potential they can bring to your professional career.
